Toves is Pro Bowl bound
While the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Seattle Seahawks were busy game planning in their respective locker rooms during Super Bowl XL’s halftime break in Detroit, Michigan, Mark Toves was already a winner at Miller Lite’s party at the Pacific Islands Club on Saipan.
Pacific Trading Co. general manager Charles Cepeda was on hand as a random party guest and pulled the lucky number that ultimately awarded one lucky partygoer with a pair of roundtrip airfare, tickets, and accommodations to the Pro Bowl in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Eyes panned the room for the most boisterous reaction and the crowd went wild when local softball and baseball player Mark Toves made his way to the stage when the winning number was announced.
“It feels so wonderful. I couldn’t believe my ears when I heard that ‘zero-four-two’ because I bought three tickets—one for my wife and a friend of ours—zero-four-zero, zero-four-one, and zero-four-two. I was like ‘Man that’s us’ and I couldn’t believe it. My brother-in-law, Jay Santos, said ‘You’re taking me, right?’ and I said ‘Of course. We’re going to Hawaii,” said Toves.
The softballer from the Santa Rosa II D-9ers said that he knew that there was always a chance that he could win, but said that the decision to watch the game at PIC was based on spending time with friends, family, and Miller Lite.
“That’s why we came—to have a good time at PIC and enjoy Miller Lite with Pacific Trading and to enjoy the game with my wife,” he said.
The CPS Ports Policeman and Steelers fan said that this will be his first trip to the Big Five-O, but before he made any travel plans, the Saipan Major Leaguer first had to clear the trip with his boss.
“I have to check with my chief. The first thing I have to do after the Super Bowl is go up to the airport to have a conversation with him to make sure everything’s okay,” he said.
In the days since the Steelers took home the Lombardi trophy for the fifth time, Toves applied for leave and is all set to watch the top players of the National Football League.
