San Nicolas sworn in as new Tinian mayor
Gov. Benigno R. Fitial yesterday made the same promise to Tinian as he had done to Rota—that his economic agenda would benefit not only Saipan, but the two other island communities as well.
Fitial issued this statement at the inauguration of newly elected Tinian Mayor Jose P. San Nicolas.
The new mayor was sworn into office, along with the three members of 11th Tinian Municipal Council: Francisco Q. Cruz, Charlene M. Lizama, and Trenton Brian Conner.
“The prosperity our central government seeks is not just for the residents of Saipan, but also for all our island communities, including Rota and Tinian. This administration is committed to creating more wealth for our island communities by developing legal infrastructure for healthy economic growth through additional private sector investments,” Fitial told the crowd gathered at Kammer Beach.
San Nicolas, who defeated former Senate President Joaquin Adriano last election, succeeds Francisco Borja as Tinian mayor.
Saipan Mayor Juan B. Tudela and Rota Mayor Joseph Inos were also present at the swearing in ceremony. The oathtaking followed an inaugural mass for the elected Tinian leaders.
On Rota Wednesday, Fitial vowed to do everything to support the Commonwealth’s southernmost island, which delivered a huge number of votes for him in the Nov. 5 election.
“As you know, the financial crisis we face as a Commonwealth is very difficult. We will be seriously challenged over the course of the next four years. But we will do our best to improve our financial condition, not only for Saipan and Tinian, but most especially for the people of Rota, who have been long neglected in terms of economic growth and development,” Fitial had said.
