Undefeateds go up against winless
Division leaders Cabalen-RP Cons-truction/Transamerica and Visminda-Tambayan/Nel Atalig stake their undefeated seasons against winless teams as playoff action in the Budweiser-Coca Cola 6th Annual UFO Inter-Organizational Basketball League resumes this weekend at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Cabalen (6-0) would be the first team on the hard court as it faces a 0-6 Bayani-HBR International beginning at 6pm tonight.
Like its previous victories, the powerhouse team would again rely on its stratospheric frontline led by 6’3” Dalewin Cortez, 6’2” Ronald Delos Reyes, and 6’0” Darwin Barbo. Its backcourt is also nothing to sneeze at, as Cabalen boasts of veteran sniper Ed Palma and slasher Randy Arnedo.
Bayani faces a must-win situation, as the second round of the 2005-2006 season of the UFO is a double-elimination affair. The team was blown off the court by Visminda, 75-117, last Sunday.
Immediately following the Cabalen-Bayani tussle is the game between two 2-3 win-loss teams. NAMFREL-Sabungero and 287 Club-McDonald’s will make their playoff debuts in the second game and both are expected to fight it out for that crucial first win.
Visminda (6-0) will try to keep its unblemished record intact and at the same time eliminate Bibak-Island Card (0-6) from the playoffs beginning at 4pm on Sunday.
The defending champions are heavily favored against the lightweight Bibak team, which was humiliated 82-129 last time out by Cabalen, and like Bayani, is a loss away from getting the boot.
Expected to carry the cudgels for Visminda are old reliables Pando Muleta, Jawn Joyner, Ed Cosino, and Bruise Brothers Danny Bicera and Emil De Belen.
The second game of Sunday’s doubleheader would then pit Cavite-Country House (3-2) against SMF-Shell-Seabridge (2-3) starting at 5:30pm. The two teams will be playing their first games of the playoffs.
