Commonwealth Utilities Corp. board member Joe Torres has resigned from his post, soon after the administration of Gov. Benigno Fitial took over the helm of the CNMI government.

Torres said his resignation took effect last Monday, when Fitial and Lt. Gov. Timothy Villagomez were officially sworn into their respective offices.

Torres, the chairman of the new administration’s transition committee for the CUC, said he has not heard anything from Fitial’s government whether his resignation was accepted or rejected. He did not comment when asked about his possible reappointment to the board if the courtesy resignation if formally accepted.

Torres said he has not heard of any other CUC board member turning in their respective courtesy resignations with the Fitial administration, except for Herman Sablan, who had earlier vacated his post.

The CUC board includes chair Frank Guerrero, and members Alan Perez, Laura Manglona, and Rufina Miles. Torres said the term of board member Velma Ann Palacios expired in 2005.

The Fitial administration has not announced any appointee or nominee to the beleaguered utility firm’s board of directors.
