The Emergency Management Office urged motorists on Saipan and Tinian yesterday to be extra careful due to strong trade winds that would continue until this morning.

In a special weather advisory, EMO advised motorists to be alert of the strong winds especially along mountain summits and coastal roads.

Citing information obtained from the National Weather Service in Guam, EMO said a strong pressure across the Marianas would produce strong trade winds Friday night and would continue through Saturday morning.

“Breezy conditions of 20 to 25 miles per hour with gusts to 30 mph early Friday afternoon will become windy by the evening with 25 to 30 mph and higher gusts. Winds will remain near these magnitudes through Saturday morning,” the agency said.

EMO said a wind advisory is issued when sustained winds are forecast to be 25 to 30 mph.

Winds of these magnitudes may cause minor property damage without extra precautions, EMO said.

Over the past few days, slippery roads and poor visibility caused by rain showers triggered some vehicular accidents on Saipan.

On Tuesday shortly before noon, two cars figured in an accident along Middle Road.

On Thursday afternoon, slippery road brought on by rain showers reportedly caused a vehicle to skid, slam into a tree trunk by the roadside and turn turtle on Beach Road in Susupe.

Yesterday afternoon, another vehicular accident happened along Middle Road near Verizon in Chalan Kiya.

Another vehicular collision occurred yesterday along Beach Road near the Modern Stationery in San Jose.

Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported in these accidents.
