Tinian softball on the rise
While the underhanded artists of the Saipan Softball Association have been practicing their craft at Tan Ge Field for the past couple of months now, their counterparts across the trench are preparing for a season of longball with the Men’s and Women’s Island-Wide Village Softball League in Tinian.
Organizers from the Division of Sports and Recreation are looking forward to getting teams on the field for the 2006 season, and will be holding their first meeting for all interested team representatives at 9am on Wednesday, Feb. 15, at the Tinian Municipal Gymnasium.
Both leagues are tentatively set to kick off the season on Tuesday, March 14.
The time to start recruiting is now, as team rosters—which are limited to a total of 16 players with a minimum of 10—are due for submission at the meeting.
While teams from Saipan put their teams together with players from all over the island, the organizers on Tinian take the notion of representing the home team back to its roots as the players on every roster must be from of the village that they represent.
While all of the villages may not be able to field a team independently, the organizers have combined districts to allow for a stronger pool of participants.
There are six merged teams on the women’s side, including the Marpo Heights and Valley team, the Carolinas Heights and Housing team, the sub-division team, and the Village District 1.
On the men’s side, there are four merged teams, including the Marpo Heights and Valley team, the Carolinas Heights and Housing team, the sub-division team, three Village District team that will each represent Districts 1, 2, and 3 individually.
