The Basketball Association of the Northern Mariana Islands disclosed yesterday that the 4th Annual Budweiser Cup will unfold late next month, and this time, will feature age qualifications.

League commissioner Abner Venus said the league will be open only to players 21-and-above. He did not specify the reason for the move.

“We just don’t want to get in trouble,” Venus said plainly yesterday.

Youth cagers still have a venue for action as the BANMI Men’s 25-and-under Basketball League may also kick off next month.

Venus said the 21-and-over rule will not apply to the men’s and women’s national teams, which will also compete in the league.

“We’re going to use this league to help prepare our teams for the Micronesian Games,” Venus said. “They can use the league as a venue to work on their game and chemistry so that we can be competitive in the Games.”

Venus said that like before, the entry fee for the Bud Cup will be $900, and urged interested teams to contact him as soon as possible. The fee covers membership and uniforms, which will be provided by the league.

“To avoid delays, everything should be turned in as soon as possible,” he said. “It’s still the same set up, so most of the teams already know what is expected of them.”

The winner of the Bud Cup will go home with $1,000, while second place receives $300. Third place receives $200.

Expected to return to defend their title is Bud Light-Toyota Tundra, which has won each Bud Cup since its inaugural season.
