Members of the Hotel Association of Northern Mariana Islands are offering special packages for visitors beginning this weekend in time for the Jan. 9 inauguration of Gov.-elect Benigno R. Fitial and Lt. Gov.-elect Timothy P. Villagomez.

“This is in recognition of this special event. As part of the community, we want this to be successful. HANMI members are offering special rates to visitors so it would be easier for them to come,” said HANMI chairwoman Lynn Knight.

She said special packages would include rent-a-car “to make it more affordable and more convenient for guests.”

Knight projects that most hotels on the island would be fully booked during this time in view of the arrival of visitors.

According to the inauguration committee, chaired by Joseph Villagomez, about 300 to 500 international guests have been invited to attend Monday’s events.

Ranking federal government officials, heads of states from the CNMI’s neighboring island-nations, and businessmen from nearby Asian countries are expected to arrive starting yesterday.

The activities will kick off with an inaugural golf tournament today at LauLau West Golf Course.

Other activities include a “Red Mass” at 3pm on Sunday, Jan. 8, at Mt. Carmel Cathedral for all the elected officials.

Dinner will follow at the Joeten Daidai Social Hall located behind the church.

Based on the schedule, members of the 15th Legislature will be sworn in at 10am Monday, Jan. 9, at the Legislative Building on Capitol Hill.

The inauguration of the new governor and lieutenant governor will take place at 2pm at American Memorial Park.

A fiesta-style gathering and a fireworks display follows at the park.

A by-invitation inaugural ball will also be held from 6pm to 10pm at Saipan World Resort Saipan.
