Car sales down 4 percent in ’05

The Commonwealth Auto Dealer’s Association reported a 4.2-percent decline in car sales in 2005 compared with the previous year.

Based on CADA’s December 2005 statistics, there were 1,544 units sold in calendar year 2005.

In 2004, there were 68 more cars sold, for a total of 1,612.

The CADA report showed a neck-and-neck competition between Microl Corp. (42.7 percent) and Joeten Motors (41.13 percent) in terms of market share last month.

Microl, which consistently leads the monthly sales, recorded 53 cars sold in December, while Joeten sold 51.

This is a 20-percent decline for Microl compared with its sales in December 2004, while Joeten’s sale last month was a 38-percent increase compared to its sales during the same month the previous year.

Triple J Motors, meantime, sold 20 cars last month, reflecting a 38-percent decline compared with December 2004.

Overall, Microl leads the pack, with 725 cars sold in 2005, representing a 47-percent share of the market; Joeten had 464 cars sold (30 percent), while Triple J Motors had 355 units sold (23 percent).

Of the 1,544 total sales, 796 were sedan, 363 were sports utility vehicles, 269 were trucks, and 113 were vans.

In terms of franchise, Toyota sold 624 cars, Nissan, 198; Ford, 148; Hyundai and Mazda, 130 each; Chevrolet, 101; Mitsubishi, 88; Honda, 66; Kia, 52; others, 4; and Suzuki, 3.

Microl Corp. sells Toyota and Chevrolet while Joeten Motors sells Nissan, Ford, Honda, and Kia.

Triple J Motors sells Hyundai, Mitsubishi, Isuzu, Suzuki, Subaru, and Mazda.
