SSC successful on Guam

The Saipan Swim Club had another day of success on Guam Wednesday as a number of its top performers posted top finishes in the two-day Guam International Meet. Official times from meet organizers were unavailable, but SSC coach Michael Stewart was able to relay the results of the final day upon his return to Saipan yesterday.

There was little surprise as Nina Mosley continued her impressive display in the women’s 15-16 division by winning first place in four out of five events in the Hagatna Pool. Mosley was the first to touch the tiles in both the 100m and 200m Freestyle, the 100m Butterfly, and the 50m Backstroke, and was the runner-up in the 50m Breaststroke.

Nicole Calvo also competed well in the division with a third place finishes in both the 100m and 200m Freestyle, and the 50m Breaststroke, while taking fourth in the 100m Butterfly.

Jellian Majors added another pair of second place finishes in the girls’ 9-10 year-old division with a strong showing in the 50m Breaststroke and 100m Butterfly, before bagging bronze in both the 100m and 200m Freestyle, and the 50m Backstroke.

Emma McCullough-Stearns also came away with a proud performance by taking fourth place in the 11-12 year-old division’s 50m Breaststroke.

On the guy’s side, youngster Clay McCullough-Stearns continued where he left off on opening day by continuing his string of lifetime bests in the Hagatna tank. Stewart said that McCullough-Stearns was “Having the meet of his life” in Guam and that both Rezne Wong and Michael Camacho had all lifetime bests in the pool on the final day f the event.

Brothers Juan and Michael Camacho each earned first place finishes in the 15-16 year-old division, as Juan earned the gold in the 50m Breaststroke while Michael did so in the 50m Backstroke.

Juan added four second place finishes in the 50m Backstroke, 100m Butterfly, and both the 100m and 200m Freestyle, while Michael finished strong with third place finishes in the 100m and 200m Freestyle, the100m Butterfly, and took fourth in the 50m Breaststroke.

Wong churned through the Guamanian waters with a third place finish in the 50m Breaststroke, a fourth in the 50m Backstroke, and was the sixth to tap the tiles in the 100m in the 13-14 year-old division, as he was the first to tap the tiles in each of the 100m and 200m Freestyle and the 100m Butterfly

After blowing away the 9-10 year-old division in the 400m Freestyle on opening day, Kensuke Kimura continued with a pair of second place finishes in the 100m and 200m Freestyle before taking fourth in the 50m Breaststroke.

The only bad news that came out of Guam was that Kimura’s previously reported record breaking fish-like 400m Freestyle performance did not break Wong’s three-and-a-half-year-old SSC record in the 9-10 year-old division.

When Kimura’s time was relayed from coach Stewart via his cellular phone from Guam, the Saipan Tribune mistakenly heard a time of 5:40:83, instead of 5:48.3.
