Each year, around the Christmas holidays, the islands have been steadily importing real Christmas trees from abroad. But what can we do with the trees after the holidays? Give a gift to the Earth by recycling your Christmas trees and helping other trees and plants become greener with nutrients from recycled Christmas trees.

Department of Public Works-Solid Waste Management Division will be happy to accept real Christmas trees for chipping into mulch.

Mulch can be composted and turned into “humus.” It is called abonu in Chamolinian. Abonu provides nutrients to the soil and can be used in vegetable and flower gardens, tree planting, landscaping, and public beautification projects.

Mulch is available to residents at no charge and can be picked up at the Lower Base Refuse Transfer Station-Green Waste area.

Be sure to remove all decorations from the tree, including ornaments, garland, tinsel, and water stand. Bring in Christmas cards and gift-wrappings for recycling, too. (PR)
