Officials of the 2005 IVYBL Christmas Tournament are giving teams until 9am to settle their financial obligations.

In an interview yesterday, co-coordinator Joe Mettao reiterated what fellow official Jonathan Tenorio stated earlier, explaining that the 10 available slots for the tournament has not officially been filed because teams have yet to pay the $100 entrance fee.

“We can’t have 11 teams, but because the teams that have shown interest have not yet paid the money, then it is still open. If a team that has not shown interest all of a sudden comes in and has the money, that team is good to go,” Mettao said.

He said, however, that the 10 teams that have shown interest in competing will be attended to first because they have been taking part in the organizational meetings the past few months.

“If one of the 10 teams doesn’t have the money, then that’s when we’ll open the door to other teams,” he said.

The tournament, which is being organized by the Division of Sports and Recreation, kicks off today at 9am at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium and will conclude with a championship game at 3pm on Thursday.

The 14-and-under competition has already drawn interest from San Antonio I and II, Garapan Rollers I and II, Matansa Sparks I and II, Capitol Hill, Chalan Kanoa Saints, Tinian, and the Bwibwiis.

An awards banquet sponsored by Saipan Mayor Juan B. Tudela will be held shortly after the championship game.

Each team can have up to 18 players, however, only 15 can play in a game.

Tenorio had earlier explained that the team that wins the title will not only take home a trophy and a year’s worth of bragging rights, but will also pocket $250. Second place will receive $200, third place $150, and fourth place $100. The team that wins the Sportsmanship Award will receive $75, while the most valuable player will take home $50.
