Mayor Tudela assures support for man’amko
The municipality of Saipan has assured the clients of the Office on Aging that it would continue to support programs for the elderly in the Commonwealth.
Saipan Mayor Juan B. Tudela together with his staff visited the Aging Center yesterday afternoon and gave away at least 100 stockings with goodies inside as part of the municipality’s Christmas treat to the elderly.
The mayor gave his speech in Chamorro, which he explained in English afterwards to benefit those who do not speak the vernacular.
“I myself is a candidate of the old age program,” he said, adding that because the community has expressed their confidence in him to serve another four years, he said he is vouching his support for the man’amko.
Tudela said whoever would be taking over from Office on Aging director Joseph Palacios, who served the center for almost four years, would completely get the support of the Saipan Mayor’s Office.
The stockings the Saipan Mayor’s Office gave away yesterday were donated by the Northern Marianas College Nursing Department this week, according to one of the mayor’s staff.
The Saipan Mayor’s Office stuffed the stockings with toothpaste, toothbrush, candies, towels, and Christmas cards. The mayor also brought Santa Claus in the center where the man’amko had the chance to have their photos taken with the Christmas icon.
Man’amko chair Sinchy Kapwich also gave an appreciation speech for the visiting mayor. He said on behalf of the man’amko, he expresses his sincere gratitude to the mayor for visiting them this holiday season and for the presents he gave all of them. “Thank you for choosing us,” he said.
Seventy-two-year old Ted Guiao said the mayor had made each of them very ecstatic two days before Christmas Day. “We appreciate the gift that we received today and we want to thank the mayor for this,” Guiao said.
As a token of their appreciation the man’amko sang all together Silent Night, which they sang both in English and Chamorro.
