Cuki Alvarez wins by TKO in Fury IV
Saipan local fighter Cuki Alvarez of Trench Tech-Purebred Saipan recently showed the warrior in him and made his pro fight debut with a bang after wowing the crowd and winning his fight by technical knockout in Fury IV: Collision at the University of Guam Fieldhouse on Guam.
Alvarez, who also won an exhibition fight in Fury III: Fighting Islands on Saipan last April 9, was phenomenal in his debut last Dec. 10 against Guam’s Billy Ray Ada, a well-known street brawler with a boxing and wrestling background.
Ada came out as the aggressor at the start of the bout, throwing a flurry of punches, however, Alvarez kept his focus, remained calm, and was able to counter the attack.
The tables turned on Ada as Alvarez brought his opponent down to the mat by perfectly executing a clean double-leg take down.
Alvarez then mounted his opponents and threw a barrage of left and rights to Ada’s head and face, forcing the referee to step in and stop the fight at the 2:43 mark of the first round and give Alvarez the win in the spiketagon cage.
The fight was one of eight bouts witnessed by over 4,000 cheering spectators.
“I knew Billy was going to try to out-punch and out-power me because of his boxing and wrestling background, but I trained really hard for the fight and I knew I could bang with him,” Alvarez said yesterday.
Alvarez, who specializes on ground fights, explained that his strategy was to bring his opponent down to the mat, and thus, giving himself the advantage.
“I knew that if I took him down, the fight would be over,” he said. “My specialty is ground and pound so that’s exactly what I did.”
Alvarez was accompanied on Guam by trainers and sparring partners Tetsuji Kato, Jason Tarkong, and Frank Camacho of Trench Tech-Purebred Saipan, and credited his victory to all who train with him at the Trench Tech gym.
Alvarez next move is to prepare for another fight on Guam as he is already in the card for Fury V on Jan. 28, 2006.
Last April, Alvarez took center stage in a grappling exhibition match against Guam’s Joey Lopez in Fury III at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium. The fight quickly went to the ground, where Alvarez got Lopez to tap out with a mount choke in the first round.
