10 teams show interest in IVYBL Christmas tourney
The 2005 IVYBL Christmas Tournament has already attracted 10 teams, according to organizers.
Co-coordinator Jonathan Tenorio, however, disclosed yesterday that the 10 slots have yet to be officially filled and other teams interested in competing in the 14-and-under basketball tournament can still register as none of the 10 teams have paid the $100 entrance fee.
“We announced that it was a first come first serve, meaning the first 10 teams that settle their financial obligations will be the teams that will compete,” he said. “We have 10 teams that said they want to play, but have not paid their fee, so there’s no confirmation.”
Teams who look to compete in the tournament include San Antonio I and II, Garapan Rollers I and II, Matansa Sparks I and II, Capitol Hill, Chalan Kanoa Saints, Tinian, and the Bwibwiis.
“A team that’s not on that list but comes in and pays the fee will be in,” Tenorio said. “As long as we don’t have payments from 10 teams, we will keep registration open.”
The tournament will run from Dec. 27 and Dec. 29 at the Ada Gym, and Tenorio stressed that all teams must pay the fee and submit required documents prior to the start of the competition. Each team can have up to 18 players, however, only 15 can play in a game.
“They can alternate players every game,” Tenorio said.
The first game will be held at 9am, while the championship game on Dec. 29 is expected to tip off at 3pm. An awards banquet sponsored by Saipan Mayor Juan B. Tudela will be held shortly after the championship game.
Tenorio also confirmed that the team that wins the title will not only take home a trophy and a year’s worth of bragging rights, but will also pocket $250. Second place will receive $200, third place $150, and fourth place $100. The team that wins the Sportsmanship Award will receive $75, while the most valuable player will take home $50.
