Pacific Oriental, Inc. has begun providing ramp and cargo operations for Northwest Airlines since Dec. 1, partly winning the bidding process for the airline company’s ground-handling contracts.

POI general manager Frank Camacho confirmed this development yesterday, saying that his company has entered into a two-year contract with Northwest regarding ramp and cargo operations.

Camacho said, however, that another company, Pacific Airport Service, obtained Northwest’s contract for cleaning services and airport counter operations.

Earlier this year, there were reports that both POI and Continental Micronesia lost the bidding for Northwest’s ground-handling contracts.

The non-renewal of Continental’s counter operations contract with Northwest exacerbated the furlough of employees at the former airline. Before this, Continental placed several employees on furlough status following the pullout of Japan Airlines’ regular flights to Saipan.

Reportedly, though, Continental continues to provide ground-handling services to Northwest in terms of aircraft maintenance.
