The Northern Marianas College-Cooperation Research Extension and Education Service suggested several ways to save on Christmas decors this holiday season during the Christmas Family Fun Fair held Friday afternoon at Room D1 of the college.

Polly Omechelang, a 4H extension agent, said the event also intended to get CNMI families together for a weekend afternoon or two to share new ideas about alternative and cheap Christmas adornments to their homes.

The event also showcased low-cost Christmas trees made from dried portions of trees painted and adorned with handmade decors.

One tree was painted white with Bristol ribbons and other decorations made of colored papers. Other Christmas trees were painted golden brown with handmade handicrafts made of palm leaves.

Omechelang demonstrated how to create Christmas balls out of the leaves. She said the decorations would not cost a family more than $10.

Giftwrapping techniques were also shown during the fair, but the highlight of the event was the “Gingerbread House Making Contest” involving the kids and their parents. NMC-CREES officer Patricia Coleman led the demonstration and the competition for the kids.

NMC-CREES Rota also participated in the event. Evelyn M. Mendiola flew from Rota last Friday just to represent the Rota campus in the event. She also brought some centerpiece decorations made from natural materials. She said the decor did not cost her anything since she used materials she found at the yard of the Rota campus.
