Besides assuring the Public School System its autonomy, the incoming administration of Gov.-elect Benigno R. Fitial and Lt. Gov.-elect Timothy P. Villagomez also promised that it would also be lending government experts to teach in schools.

Transition Committee sub-chair Daniel Nielsen, who attended the special board meeting of the Board of Education Friday morning, said due to the current shortage of teachers, the new administration might lend some government officials who are experts in their fields.

Nielsen said, for example, that the government could “lend” officials of the Division of Fish and Wildlife to public schools and they could teach biology. He said there are also scientists and mathematicians in the government that could also help the schools.

“This could be part of their curriculum,” Nielsen said.

He added that the new administration would be working together not only with the PSS but also with the Northern Marianas College.

Nielsen specifically said that the incoming administration is looking at helping the islands’ only community college with regards to its instruction requirements. He added that this way the PSS could be assisted in its mission of promoting more quality education in the CNMI.

The incoming administration earlier said that it would respect the autonomy of the PSS as well as support its various projects.

Nielsen, together with co-sub-chair Frank Rabauliman, assured the BOE and PSS officials that the PSS would have the full support of the incoming administration. Nielsen presented to the board the outline of the next administration’s position in education matters.
