Jury finds man guilty of sexually abusing a minor
A Superior Court jury yesterday found a man guilty of sexually assaulting and abusing a minor girl.
After a day and a half of deliberations, the jurors reached a verdict finding Md. Aktar Hossain guilty of two counts of sexual assault in the second degree and two counts of sexual abuse of a minor in the second degree.
Superior Court Presiding Judge Robert Naraja also found the 28-year-old Hossain guilty of one count of disturbing the peace. He acquitted the defendant on the other count of disturbing the peace.
It was Naraja made the decision on the misdemeanor charges. He set the sentencing for March 14, 2006.
The trial lasted for two weeks.
Assistant Attorney General Rebecca Warfield told the Saipan Tribune that the verdict “does not make the victim whole anymore, but it’s justice.”
Warfield said the jurors were really taking time and that they were interested in rendering justice in accordance with the law and the facts in the case.
Warfield said the charges carry a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in prison.
Assistant Public Defender Angela Krueger, counsel for Hossain, refused to comment on the verdict.
The Attorney General’s Office charged the 27-year-old Hossain for sexually abusing the minor several times in 2002 and 2003. The defendant denied the charges.
When the incident happened the victim was between eight to nine years old, the AGO said.
