Youth showing stuff in NYBA cagefest
Action in the ongoing 2005 Northern Youth Basketball Association Tournament continued Wednesday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium as cagers from three youth divisions continued to showcase their skills.
After giving way to 16-19 division players in the morning and early afternoon, the Division II cagers finally took the court, with the Matansa Sparks outlasting Capitol Hill Stars, 31-24.
The battle was tight as both teams, with players between ages 13 and 16 years, hustled on every play to finish the first half with the score knotted at 14-14.
The Sparks, however, were able to pull the right strings and got eight points from Edwin Camacho in the second half to leave with the victory.
The younger players of Division I then took the court as the Garapan Rollers I earned their second win of the tournament with a 34-28 victory over the Capitol Hill Stars.
The two teams worked the ball around and put up balanced attacks, with no player recording double digit scoring. The loss was the first for the Stars, who are 1-1.
Sister teams G-Rollers I and II of Division II followed by going head to head, with the G-I crew getting 16 and 10 points from Jeri Cruz and Jose Castro for a 59-36 win.
Division III action returned in the evening, with the Capitol Hill Stars strolling to their second win of the day with an 83-55 victory over the Bwibwiis.
Dan Barcinas and William Kaipat led the Stars with 18 and 17 points. while Kovin Ogumoro and John Santos had 14 and 10 points.
Julian Fitial and Richard Igisomar led Bwibwiis with 18 and 16 points.
The Bwibwiis and Stars met again, this time in Division II, but it was the same result as the Stars used a strong second half push to leave with a 51-35 victory.
No games were held yesterday. Action returns today and will continue until the championship games on Sunday.
