Bomsoro comes to play at SSA
Bomsoro made a mess of Mix-A-Lot in a 21-4 shelling as the Saipan Softball Association brought its brand of ball back to Tan Ge Softball Field Tuesday night in the return of the Women’s Island-Wide Slow-Pitch Softball League.
Connie Camacho led the charge for the laid-back team as Bomsoro scored 21 runs off of 20 hits in just five innings before the umpires were forced to invoke the 10-run mercy rule.
Camacho went a perfect 4-for-4 with four singles and four runs scored, but she wasn’t the only heavy hitter for Bomsoro as Leilani Taro-Betevua was a flawless 4-for-4 as well with three singles, a triple, and a pair of runs batted in.
Pitcher Jovie Omar even got into the hitting clinic by slugging 2-for-3 with a single, a double, and four runs batted in for her team as they skated to their second win in as many games.
At 2-0, Bomsoro holds a slim lead over most of the pack early into the season, but the Lady-8ers made a statement in their first game out of the box as they put a whoopin’ on the Sai-Steve Rookies in an 18-2 blowout.
The 8ers took a slow and steady approach to the game by building a gradual lead until they took advantage of seven walks in the seventh inning to put the game away for good.
With an 11-2 advantage heading into the final inning, the Lady-8ers just had to sit back and relax as their first four batters drew walks to score a run. After Pat Norita grounded out to first, Jennifer Teigita and Arlene Lekisap took first for free, and by the time the inning was over they had scored seven runs—six off of walks.
The team was not without its own offensive merits as they scored their 18 runs off of 17 hits, but their patience at the plate could prove pivotal when they face Bomsoro on Thursday, Dec. 15.
The one-sided matches came to a close when the Hitters won a close one against It’s Okay when they came back from a 6-2 deficit in the third inning to hold on for a 12-8 victory—their first of the season.
The Hitters picked up most of their punch in the power-packed third inning when they scored five runs off of six hits to take a 7-6 lead, but It’s Okay rallied to regain the advantage by scoring their final two runs in the top of the fourth.
The Hitters came back with a pair of their own in their next at bats and added some insurance during a three-run fifth in which Juliana A. Atalig hit a homerun.
At 1-1, the Hitters are caught in a logjam in third place with It’s Okay and Mix-A-Lot, while Pacific Amigas (0-1) and the Sai-Steve Rookies are still looking for their first wins from the bottom.
