Police arrested two suspects in a string of burglaries and theft, whose alleged modus operandi consists of pawning stolen jewelry and valuables for cash. The suspects also allegedly burglarized a church and stole equipment from it.

The suspects were allegedly involved in at least three burglaries on different parts of Saipan—one each in Tanapag, Gualo Rai and Chinatown.

Twenty-two-year-old Daniel Howell Dela Cruz allegedly confessed to the burglaries and pointed to another another man, 25-year-old Michael Mikawa Peter, as his alleged cohort.

Police investigation showed that the suspects stole a bush cutter from the Korean Presbyterian Church in Chinatown earlier this year and pawned the equipment for cash at the GEC Pawnshop.

On July 4, the suspects allegedly stole some $200 in cash, assorted jewelry, and a compact disc player from a garment factory barracks in Gualo Rai. The two workers who lost their valuables, Dong Ai Cui and Quiyue Jin, discovered the burglary upon returning from work when they noticed their room’s window broken.

The latest incident occurred on Sept. 20, when the suspects allegedly broke into a Tanapag residence and stole $700 in cash, assorted jewelry valued at $2,730. Police said the victim, Guanghao Pei, was at work when the incident happened.

Both suspects appeared at the Superior Court Thursday in connection with burglary and theft charges. Presiding Judge Robert Naraja imposed $10,000 bail on each of the suspects in each of the three burglary cases. The judge scheduled the suspects’ arraignment on Dec. 5.
