The Department of Public Safety yesterday explained the recent transfer of former Criminal Investigation Bureau chief Maj. Edward Manalili.

DPS acting public information officer Eric David said he clarified the issue with his superiors and he was told that there would only be a change of command in the department.

DPS denied a report that the reason for Manalili’s change of command had to do with a cover-up involving a police officer.

It was reported that Manalili would be transferred to the Community Oriented Policing Services, which has been an inactive program of DPS. The report also said his reassignment will be effective on Nov. 20 and that he will be designated as the officer-in-charge for COPS.

According to the report, in the Nov. 14 memorandum signed by DPS Commissioner Santiago F. Tudela, Manalili will be reporting directly to the commissioner. Manalili reportedly confirmed his new assignment but refused to comment.
