While the rest of the Commonwealth awaits the results of the 2005 general elections this Saturday, children and parents will enjoy a parade that will foster reading and literacy.

Saipan Rotary Club is inviting the CNMI community to watch and participate in this Saturday’s “Rotary’s Parade of Books.”

Rotary Club president James Whitt said the event would begin exactly at 2pm and last around 6pm at the American Memorial Park Amphitheater.

“The Rotary Club is encouraging all school children of the CNMI from kindergarten through the 8th grade to read books,” said Whitt.

Schools will select a book and then students will parade in costumes that depict the story book characters that they have read about, said Whitt, and the Rotary Club will offer cash prizes to schools that come up with the best costumes.

Whitt said the club has received positive responses from public and private school educators about the “Parade of Books.” Rotary Club is now expecting at least 400 participants during the event.

“The parade promises to be fun filled day for our school children,” Whitt said.

Prizes at stake are $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place, and $250 for third place. Participating schools will receive $100 in cash prizes each.

Rotary Club officials said schools participating would have the opportunity to receive cash prizes to purchase supplies to enhance their respective literacy programs.
