G-Rollers I, Sonics, NMIFA top headlines
Garapan Rollers I, Southern Sonics, and the Northern Mariana Islands Football (Soccer) Association grabbed the headlines this past week.
The G-Rollers I and Sonics are figuring in the championship of the 2005 Saipan Rotary Club Youth Basketball League this coming Tuesday after both teams snuck past separate opponents in Thursday’s semifinal action at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
In the first game, pennant champions G-Rollers I turned back upset-conscious Toyota Camry, 68-57, to take the first finals seat. The Sonics would join them in the title bash a couple of hours later after completing a come-from-behind 92-89 win over inter-village rival San Antonio Sixers I.
NMIFA also got its inaugural season going last Nov. 5 when over 300 kids took part in Day 1 of the soccer season at American Memorial Park. A lot of things are expected from futball as its president Jerry Tan promised the soccer league for 13-18 years olds would only get bigger and better in years to come.
The week also saw Gov. Juan N. Babauta sign the executive order forming the executive committee for Saipan’s hosting of the 2006 Micronesian Games. The governor signed the EO last Wednesday and designated Department of Community and Cultural Affairs Secretary Juan Lizama Babauta as chair and Northern Marianas Amateur Sports Association president Michael White as vice chair.
On Friday, the Northern Mariana Islands Tennis Association kicked off the 2005 Calvo’s Insurance Junior Tennis Fall Classic at the American Memorial Park tennis courts, which feature the islands’ top junior players.
Action in the 2005 Budweiser Cup BANMI Men’s Island-wide Basketball League, 6th Annual Budweiser-MARPAC UFO Inter-Organization Basketball League, 7th Annual Miller Lite Coed Four-Person Beach Volleyball League, 2005 World Organized Rocball High School League, and the 2005 Saipan Major League Fall edition also continued last week.
