The track and field oval at the Oleai Sports Complex will be closed to the public on certain hours of the week.

This according to Division of Sports and Recreation staff Elias Rangamar, who disclosed yesterday that the facility will be open only to athletes training for the upcoming 2005 Micronesian Athletics Championships from 4pm to 7pm.

The highly competitive event features top notch athletes from Guam, Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, Nauru, Marshall Islands, Palau, and the CNMI, and Rangamar said it is a must that the athletes be able to use the track to focus on their respective events.

The Championships will be held on Dec. 14 and 15 on Saipan and will play host to about 100 athletes.

The track will be completely off-limits a week prior to the event as officials will begin setting up equipments and other important aspects for the Championships.

Meanwhile, the Division of Sports and Recreation encourages all who use the track oval to assist in maintaining the facility for the benefit of everyone.

Rangamar added that general rules set by the division should be strictly obeyed in using the facility.

Among them is the use of proper athletic footwear and other running shoes. Northern Marianas Athletics and the DSR are concerned of footwear that could cause damage to the track surface.

Pets, bicycles, skateboards, roller blades, and baby strollers are also not allowed on the track premises.
