Wiseman thanks voters for retention victory

Superior Court Associate Judge David A. Wiseman expressed gratitude to CNMI voters, whose votes assured him of another six-year term once his current term as judge expires in March 2007.

The election turnout assured Wiseman of continued service with the CNMI Judiciary until March 2013. Wiseman becomes the first non-indigenous judge to win a CNMI retention election.

“I’m overwhelmed by the vote of confidence I got,” Wiseman said. “I’m also very humbled by the vote of confidence they placed in me.”

“It has added to my motivation and inspiration to continue to do the best job possible and to continue to faithfully and properly perform the duties of my office,” he added.

All three magistrates seeking retention obtained the necessary votes for a second term at the CNMI Judiciary.

CNMI Supreme Court Chief Justice Miguel S. Demapan and Associate Justice will both serve their second eight-year terms once the current ones expire.

Demapan’s office said the magistrate was off-island yesterday, while Castro was unavailable for an interview at press time.

Even without the absentee ballots, affirmative votes in favor of the magistrates’ retention not only reached majority of the votes cast, but also even exceeded half of 15,118, the total number of registered voters. The Constitution requires affirmative votes to constitute majority of the votes cast regarding the question whether a judge or justice shall be retained in office.
