Kamikaze posts score to beat
Joe “Kamikaze” Camacho fired the score to beat in November’s Refaluwasch Golf Association Ace of the Month Tournament after taming the greens and fairways of the Laolao Bay Golf Resort west course during the qualifier held last Oct. 29.
The 2004 Johnny Walker Classic participant shot an impressive gross score of five-under 67, which after his one handicap was deducted, gave Camacho a sterling net score of 66.
RGA president Jess Wabol was three shots off his fellow 2003 South Pacific Games campaigner with his 69. The former principal of Oleai Elementary School came away with a gross score of 71. Wabol has a handicap of three.
Three players—RGA secretary/treasurer Sonny Flores and former national player Joji Taguchi and former national coach Nick Sablan—finished tied at third place with identical 71s, but Flores edged the two on the front nine scorecard tiebreak.
A total of 13 duffers from RGA participated in the event, which was played like a tournament within a tournament during the inaugural Northwest Airlines Tournament for Children’s Education.
The other participants, with their net scores in parenthesis, were as follow: Tony Satur (72); eventual NWA winner Alex Aquininoc (74); Jordan Kossam (74); Mario Taitano (76); Eddie Peter (76); Manny Alvarez (77); Dick Pierce (77); and Norman Tenorio (79).
RGA also reminded members that its annual Turkey Shootout golf tournament would be held this Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Laolao Bay Golf Resort west course.
Entry fee for the yearly affair held to celebrate Thanksgiving is $100. This entitles participants to a free turkey and an assortment of in-kind items from Herman’s Bakery and other sponsors. Aside from the giveaways, the winner of the Turkey Shootout would take home $300. A get-together would be held after the tournament at the house of Joe Wabol.
Unlike the previous years’ Turkey Shootouts, Jess Wabol said the event would be donating proceeds to the island’s youth. The past years, RGA gave away turkey dinners to Saipan’s elderly or man’amko.
Jess Wabol said the golf club aims to raise at least $200 for the purchase of toys for underprivileged five- to six-year-olds whose families have not been able to afford such luxuries in the past.
Jess Wabol also reiterated RGA’s requirements for its yearend Club Championship. He said monthly champions must play in at least six ace tournaments or cede their slots in the yearend bash to their runners-up.
