Gubernatorial debate tonight
The four candidates for the highest post in the CNMI will be duking it out tonight when they face off during the Saipan Chamber of Commerce’s gubernatorial debate at the Saipan World Resort Diamond Hall.
Incumbent Gov. Juan N. Babauta of the Republican Party, House Speaker Benigno R. Fitial of the Covenant Party, former governor Froilan Tenorio of the Democratic Party, and independent candidate Rep. Heinz Hofschneider have confirmed that they will participate in the debate.
Chamber executive director Christine Parke reminded those who have purchased tickets to watch the debate that doors will open at 5:30pm and close promptly at 7pm, when the debate starts.
“No one will be allowed into the hall after 7pm, so that candidates are not distracted by latecomers,” she said in a statement.
Parke also said Monday that all tickets to the debate have already been sold out. No tickets will be sold at the gate. For those who failed to buy a ticket, she said that MCV will tape the event and will show it on Friday and Saturday evenings.
Everyone who will be attending should note that
The Saipan Chamber of Commerce sponsors these election debates to allow the public a chance to hear the candidates speak and answer questions about what they would do if elected.
“Voters must have as much information as possible to make these important decisions,” the Chamber said in a statement.
The election debates also are a fundraiser for some of the Chamber’s community activities. Specifically, proceeds from the night’s debate will help fund the Saipan Chamber of Commerce Education Scholarship Fund. In 2005, the Chamber awarded $2500 scholarships to five deserving high school students who are now in college. The proceeds will also fund the Armed Forces Committee’s activities to welcome visiting military personnel to Saipan. (PR)
