Box Tops offers kids a chance to go to DC
Think you and your parents can do a better job than your principal in running your school? Here’s your chance then.
The Box Tops for Education is holding a Kids’ Caucus Essay Contest. Children in grades 5 to 8 could win a trip to the Box Tops for Education Kids’ Caucus on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. by entering the contest.
Here’s how it works: In 250 to 500 words, students should answer this question: “If you and your parent or guardian were made principals for the day, how would you improve parental involvement at your school?”
Box Tops Education is asking students this question, recognizing that the best educational environments are created when students, teachers and parents work collaboratively.
Student essays will be accepted from now until Dec. 1, 2005. Go to www.boxtops4education.com to download an entry form.
In February, Box Tops for Education will select 50 finalists—one from each state to receive a $1,000 Parental Involvement in Education Grant that will be used by their school to improve and enhance parental involvement in education. Two additional finalists will be selected: one from the District of Columbia and one from either a U.S. territory or U.S. military-based school located outside the United States, for a total of 52 grants.
Ten grand prize winners will be selected by a panel of experts to go to Washington, where each student and his/her parent or guardian will have the opportunity to share their creative ideas for parental involvement in education programs with members of Congress.
The Box Tops for Education Kids’ Caucus is an assembly of young people, parents, education officials and members of Congress who will discuss ways to improve parental involvement in education in the United States. The caucus will be held on Capitol Hill in April.
