A man landed in jail after allegedly punching his wife in the mouth on Friday.

Police said the 37-year-old man and his wife (identities withheld) had an altercation inside their car Friday morning after the woman suspected the husband of calling a girlfriend in China.

Superior Court Presiding Judge Robert Naraja yesterday imposed a $500 bail on the defendant and appointed the Public Defender’s Office to represent the man in the court proceedings. The judge set the case’s preliminary hearing on Thursday.

Police charged the defendant with assault and battery and disturbing the peace. In an affidavit, police detective Andrea Ozawa told the court that the woman sustained swollen lips after being punched by her husband.

Based on Ozawa’s investigation, the man told his wife that he would go to Navy Hill Friday morning to have their car fixed. The woman, suspecting that the husband has a romantic affair with another woman from China, followed the defendant to a store where she anticipated the man to make a long-distance phone call.

Ozawa said the woman found the husband using the phone but he suddenly hung up. The couple went inside their car and headed home.

“On the way home, the couple argued and the suspect punched the victim’s mouth. The victim shouted at the suspect to stop the car and at the same time, she opened the door to get out so she would not get beaten up further,” Ozawa said.

“When the victim got her right leg out, the suspect speeded up, causing her to fall out of the car onto the pavement. The victim ran to a neighbor’s house and used the telephone there,” the detective added.

Police officers responded to the victim’s call for assistance and arrested her husband.
