The Attorney General’s Office filed criminal charges against a policeman who allegedly bungled an investigation on the fatal mauling of a man.

As this developed, police major Edward Manalili, Criminal Investigation Bureau commander, said his department first uncovered the alleged misconduct by police officer Kui Rogopes.

Manalili said the CIB referred the matter to the Attorney General’s Investigative Unit to prevent perceptions of bias in the investigation.

CNMI chief prosecutor Jeffrey Moots filed with the Superior Court Thursday a criminal information charging Rogopes with accessory after the fact to aggravated assault and battery and misconduct in public office.

Moots said Rogopes faces an accessory charge for assisting one Daniel Santos by filing an untruthful police report to prevent that man’s arrest.

Santos is facing criminal charges over the fatal mauling of a Palauan man on Middle Road, Garapan across the Commonwealth Health Center last Aug. 15. Police had said that Santos mauled the victim after a vehicular collision, leaving the victim injured and unconscious. The victim, whose identity police did not disclose, died several days later at the hospital. (John Ravelo)
