Independent candidate for governor Rep. Heinz S. Hofschneider accused the Babauta administration yesterday of threatening employees with job loss if they don’t actively support the “BB ticket” for re-election

In a statement, Hofschneider said that an increasing number of reports reaching his camp suggest that the Babauta administration is resorting to this tactic.

“This is not a first in the history of the CNMI,” Hofschneider said, “But it is illegal and unethical and shouldn’t be tolerated.”

Hofschneider said that he would call for an investigation if he thought there was any possibility that it would be carried out under the present administration, only days before the election.

“My best advice for those who are suffering under this pressure is to report the infraction to the Office of the Public Auditor and if you are unwilling or unable to do so, hang on for now and vote for the ticket of your choice in the privacy of the voting booth,” Hofschneider said.

“They may get away with this abuse of office for now, but our Hofschneider-Apatang ticket has made transparency and following the rules part of our political platform and applying this sort of crude political heat to employees wouldn’t be acceptable to us.”
