Twenty down, 60 more bus stops to go.

The Public School System completed the repainting of 20 bus stops on Saipan recently, leaving 60 more bus stops on island in need of a fresh paint job, according to administrative staff Dorin Salas.

The PSS is undergoing the project in cooperation with the Workforce Investment Agency.

Salas said bus stops in the following areas have already been repainted: Kagman Market, Santos, As Teo, As Bermudes, Capitol Hill Market, Esco’s, Puerto Rico, Lower Navy Hill, 99 Cents Market, Happy Market, China Town, Linson, The Fields, Conwood, Jollibee, Horiguchi, and 13th Fishermen.

Repainting projects at Boti, Mormon Church and Coca Cola are still ongoing.

Salas said the remaining 60 bus stops would soon to be repainted, adding that PSS and WIA will reconvene its volunteers and schedule a follow up for the repainting project.

The PSS last week received some heat after its repainting of bus stops and the interior of old school buses was criticized as a campaign ploy subtly endorsing the Republic Party for next month’s gubernatorial elections.

The color used for the bus stops and school bus interiors is yellow, which is the color associated with incumbents Gov. Juan N. Babauta and Lt. Gov. Diego T. Benavente of the GOP party.

Associate commissioner for administrative services David M. Borja said they used that particular color because that was already the color of the school buses and it is also a safety-related color.

Borja said PSS also had to repaint the interior of the school buses to remove traces of graffiti. He further clarified that the paint was ordered a long time ago and that they only needed to determine the schedule of the repainting project.

The repainting project was funded through the assistance of the National Emergency Grant.
