The Northern Marianas College signed a “sister school” agreement with Yokohama Shogyo High School of Japan yesterday morning at the NMC Board of Regents conference room.

NMC president Tony Deleon Guerrero met with Yokohama Municipal Schools Japan’s International Department chief Hiroaki Nagai, who attended the signing on behalf of YSHS principal Norio Takahashi.

The agreement states that NMC and YSHS have formed an affiliation and sister school agreement to promote education, training, and other international exchange programs between the two learning institutions.

“The purpose of this collaborative agreement is to strengthen the postsecondary educational programs at both institutions and to contribute to the development of regional exchange programs between NMC and YSHS,” said the agreement.

The agreement was based on postsecondary education as an essential investment for people and, through this partnership, both organizations will foster innovative educational and cultural exchange programs that are accessible to interested individuals in the CNMI and the country of Japan.

The terms, conditions, and cooperative programs under the agreement include promoting quality educational and training programs for students and faculty members at both institutions through international exchange activities; encouraging different program personnel from both institutions to explore opportunities for augmenting the classroom learning of students through short-term cooperative projects either on-site or via distance education; improving the learning and teaching environments of both institutions by incorporating regionalism, internationalism, and multiculturalism in appropriate cooperative research studies and collaborative projects; assisting in strengthening international relationships and foreign affairs by expanding access to higher education programs at both institutions; developing institutional advancement programs which will produce mutual benefits and assist both institutions in meeting their respective educational missions and goals; and sharing and exchanging academic materials, publications, and other pertinent information for continuous quality improvement purposes and the exchange of best practices, ideas, research, and technologies.
