EMO warns beachgoers of high surf
Winds associated with a tropical disturbance in Pagan have prompted weather officials to issue high surf and small craft advisories.
The advisories were still in effect at 2pm yesterday.
As of 11:15am yesterday, the tropical disturbance was located 50 miles west of Pagan and about 205 miles north-northwest of Saipan.
Southwest winds were traveling 10 to 20 knots for Rota and 15-25 knots for Tinian and Saipan, bringing in scattered rainshowers and isolated thunderstorms.
The Emergency Management Office said the disturbance was not expected to develop significantly yesterday, but it would turn into a tropical depression once it moved to the north.
Residents of Saipan, Tinian, Rota, Pagan, and Agrihan were advised that occasional and increasing showers, a slight chance of thunderstorms, and gusty winds would be experienced through today.
At 2pm, EMO added that moderate to fresh westerly winds flowing into the tropical disturbance would bring hazardous surf of about 7 to 9 feet to southwest, west, and northwest facing exposures.
“Gov. Juan N. Babauta is strongly advising the mariners, swimmers, fishermen, beach goers, [and] divers to stay away from exposed reef as wind and wave conditions support dangerous rip currents. Rip currents are life-threatening to anyone entering the water,” EMO said.
