EMO issues flood advisory
A tropical disturbance continued to wander around the Marianas region, bringing scattered heavy showers that flooded portions of Saipan.
The Emergency Management Office maintained its advisory for motorists to take extra precaution and to watch out for debris and flooding, especially in northern Saipan.
The EMO said after noontime yesterday that the weather disturbance would last until 5pm. By 4pm, though, the National Weather Service said the weather condition might last until today.
Last Sunday, the EMO said a poorly defined tropical disturbance was located about 7 miles east of Agrihan, 48 miles north of Pagan, and 255 miles north of Saipan. The agency said heavy rainfall occurred not only on those islands, but also on Tinian, but added that the weather disturbance would drift slowly in a northeasterly direction.
Yesterday afternoon, the EMO said the disturbance was located about 80 miles east of Pagan, 100 miles east-southeast of Agrihan and 215 miles north-northeast of Saipan. It said those islands and Tinian were experiencing heavy rainfall.
The NWS said at 4pm that the disturbance was located about 130 miles west-northwest of Saipan.
“Scattered heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected across the Marianas through Tuesday, with 2 to 4 inches of rain and minor flooding possible,” the NWS said.
Saipan experienced not only heavy rainfall but also windy conditions yesterday. But the NWS reported no tropical cyclone in the Marianas region.
