Candidates for lieutenant governor will be placed under the spotlight during a debate at the Northern Marianas College on Thursday.

The NMC class on democratic institutions will be sponsoring and conducting the debate on Oct. 13, 2005, at 5pm in room D1 at the college campus in As Terlaje. Doors will be opened at 4:30pm and closed at 5:15 pm.

Instructor Sam McPhetres said that attendance would be limited to students, faculty, staff, and the press. He added that the rules of engagement would closely resemble those followed in debates organized by the Saipan Chamber of Commerce.

At Chamber debates, candidates answer randomly chosen questions in each of the following areas: ethics, economy, environment, infrastructure, health care, education, and federal relations.

Questions used in the debate are submitted by Chamber members and are reviewed for fairness and clarity.

This October, the business organization is also sponsoring a series of debates among candidates for the Nov. 5, 2005 general elections.

The senatorial election debate will be held on Oct. 17, Monday, at 7pm at the Hibiscus Hall of Dai-Ichi Hotel Saipan Beach.

On Oct. 26, Wednesday, gubernatorial candidates will face off at 7pm at the Diamond Hall of World Resort Hotel.

The cost is $15 per ticket per debate. Students with proof of student status can purchase tickets for $7. Tickets at the door for everyone will be $20.
