American Red Cross-NMI Chapter’s John Hirsh and Lynn Corella left the island yesterday to help relief efforts in areas affected by hurricanes Katrina and Rita in the U.S. mainland.

Hirsh and Corella are the first two Red Cross disaster services workers deployed from the NMI to the disaster areas.

Both Hirsh and Corella left for Montgomery, Alabama to begin their three-week assignment. Hirsh will work with the operation management team, while Corella will be assisting with crisis and grief counseling.

The NMI Chapter, along with over 875 Chapters around the country, have mobilized volunteers to assist in what is now being billed as the most catastrophic natural disaster in U.S. history.

The American Red Cross plans on continuing its services to those in need for at least another six months with long-term recovery issues.
