PREL is making available free HIV/AIDS prevention materials
Pacific Resources for Education and Learning, or PRE, is providing free HIV/AIDS prevention materials to U.S.-affiliated Pacific islands.
Through a National Library of Medicine community outreach project, PREL developed educational and informational materials that are culturally, linguistically, and technologically appropriate for the target audience in the Pacific.
One product developed under this project is a cartoon booklet originating from the Secretariat of the Pacific Community. In partnerships with the SPC and volunteers from local DOEs and MOEs across the Pacific, PREL adapted and translated this booklet from English into six major Pacific languages: Carolinian, Chamorro (CNMI, Guam), Marshallese, Palauan, and Pohnpeian.
The booklet is intended to communicate health information in a simple and memorable way for audiences with basic reading skills and limited functional literacy. The other product PREL developed under this project is the reproduction of an existing PREL CD-ROM supported by the World Health Organization.
This HIV/AIDS prevention CD is a self-directed and self-paced guide covering symptoms and treatment information of the disease. The booklet will be posted online at http://ppo.prel.org/ and the content from the CD is available at www.prel.org/healthonline/index.asp.
All agencies and organizations, including libraries, schools, departments of health, and healthcare and community service providers are encouraged to promote and distribute these free resources to the general public.
Hard copies of the booklets and the CD can be requested via askprel@prel.org. PREL is an independent, nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation that serves the educational community in the U.S.-affiliated Pacific islands, the continental United States, and countries throughout the world.
PREL bridges the gap between research, theory, and practice in education and works collaboratively with schools and school systems to provide services that range from curriculum development to assessment and evaluation. For further information, visit PREL’s website. (PR)
