The Matansa Sparks and Garapan Rollers II were evenly matched during the first quarter, but a stronger charge by the Sparks enabled them to pull off a 58-53 victory Monday in the 2005 Saipan Rotary Club Youth Basketball League at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

The match was tightly fought in the opening half as both teams matched each other point for point, heading to the break with the game knotted at 19-19.

James Camacho and Richard Benjamin were the Sparks’ lethal weapons in the half, scoring eight and six points, while the G-II squad used their well-balanced attack to stay in contention.

The intense battle continued as action resumed. However, the G-II cagers were not able to keep up with their opponents.

Zack Diaz and Ken Deleon Guerrero worked their magic for nine points apiece and Jose Ulloa scored all of his seven points, fueling the team to outscore G-II, 39-34, to survive.

Camacho finished with 13 points while Diaz and Deleon Guerrero both had 11 points to lead the Sparks.

Ric Basila led G-II with 15 points while Nate Mateo supported him with 10 points in a losing cause.

League action continued last night as the Toyota Camry took on G-Rollers III and the Bwibwiis battled the Sparks. Results weren’t available as of press time.

Action continues today with the Chalan Kanoa Saints taking on the undefeated G-Rollers I at 5:30pm.
