Bo Wang sets new SIS run record

Middle distance runner Bo Wang set a new female record in the 5th Annual Saipan International School 5K Fun Run Saturday morning in Marpi.

The Marianas High School student topped the 16-19 female age group with a sterling time of 21:53, beating the previous record set by Kathryn Sinclair in 2002. Sinclair’s time was 22:52.

Meanwhile, Chris Linder was the overall winner and topped the men’s 30-39 field after crossing the finish line in 19:12, while Chang Whang Jang caught the eyes of everyone by placing second overall and first in the 50-and-over category with a time of 20:02. Chang ran the entire course barefooted. Rob Carruth placed third overall and topped the 40-49 class in 20:15.

Monica Yamaguchi posted the second best female time and was first in the 50-and-over category after clocking in at 24:01, while Melody Ludwick had the third fastest time and was best in the 13-15 category with 25:37.

Triathlete Natasha Good and swimmer Myana Welch finished behind Wang in the 16-19 category with times of 28:48 and 34:22, while Madison Smith and Katy Johnson followed Ludwick in the 13-15 category, clocking in at 27:42 and 30:10.

For her part, Jellian Majors won the female 10-12 age group in 32:10. She was followed by Zoe Jewell (37:58) and Madison Schultz (30:03).

Becca Newman and Amanda Armstrong topped the female 20-29 group in 26:14 and 48:08, while Aysem Bray (29:26), Roxy Lamar (29:55), and Brenda Schultz (30:29) led the female 30-39 group. Irma Halaby (26:08), Vickie Taitano (26:12), and Pam Thorpe 34:49 topped the 40-49 category, while Julie Newman (30:28) placed second in the 50-and-over.

In the men’s corner, Fred Camacho (22:52) and Brian Smith (23:16) placed second and third in the 50-and-over class; Paul Anthony (21:32) and Richard Haugh (21:55) took second and third in the 40-49 field; and Ronald Villafria (21:06) and Tim Bray (25:18) took second and third in the 30-39 group.

Hunter Thorpe (27:50), Crosby Schultz (28:01), and Bradley Brostrom (35:01) topped the 10-12 category; Kyung Ho Jeong (24:33), D.J. Taitano (25:24), and Antonio Hockett (25:47) won the 13-15 category; Caleb Gabbie (21:35), Paul Jaymar (21:49), and Gary Camacho (25:46) won the 16-19 category.

A total of 134 individuals participated in the fun run, which was sponsored by Deloitte, Azuma, PCC Corp., XO Market, Micronesian Marine, Island Apparel, Coca Cola, McDonald’s, Ice Creamery, Avon, Hyatt Club Elan, Pacific Islands Club, Tropical Blend Spa, and Saipan Photo Lab.
