Bowlliards at USSP tonight

USSP held its first bowlliards competition Monday, and a good time was had by all.

Only 10 players were adventurous enough to try it the first time around, others just sat and watched.

They were divided into two teams, the Chiefs and the Indians, who took turns scoring one “bowling” frame.

Several of the players looked good in practice but got a case of the nerves with everyone watching. Welson Apaisam was the only player who didn’t seem affected; as he got a spare on his first try for the Indians.

The other Indians, Ron Chisato, Rick Rengiil, Rose Phillips, and Albert Gurusamy, looked like they could go all of the way, but were a little short.

That was good enough to upend the Chiefs, who did just a little worse than the Indians in almost every frame. Mei Rengiil was their best performer, dropping eight points and looking like she should finish the table, but it wasn’t to be.

Juan Ngimak, Annie Tesiro, Ace Elameto and Mike Heston rounded out the team.

To protect the guilty, the two players who didn’t make a ball with two chances won’t be mentioned. They’ll get out of the gutter next time.

Chisato said it seemed like a good way to practice getting position and running the balls.

According to USSP owner Rose Phillips, that was the idea. “We’re looking at challenging other bars in eight ball,” she said. “Some of those players are very good pool shooters.”

The game may seem complicated, but it’s really very simple. Each player breaks a 10-ball rack, and then has two chances to run all of the balls. Anything dropped on the first chance counts as one pin and is scored like bowling. If all 10 balls are run, it’s a strike. The same goes for the second chance, and if the player gets the remaining balls it’s scored as a spare.

Phillips plans on continuing with bowlliards every Monday starting at 8pm. Latecomers can still join, even if the competition has started. (PR)
