BANMI president Mike Muna and vice president Elias Rangamar are currently taking part in FIBA Oceania’s Administrators Seminar in New Zealand in hopes of enhancing their knowledge and skills on improving basketball programs in the Commonwealth.

Including the CNMI, a total of 15 national federations within the Oceania region are taking part in the seminar, as well as head of FIBA’s information technology section Wolfram Klug of Switzerland.

“What they learn will help BANMI as well as the [Division of Sports and Recreation] better organize basketball programs in the CNMI,” said longtime BANMI official Mike White.

Rangamar and Muna left for New Zealand on Thursday and are expected to return on Monday, Oct. 10. Airfare and living accommodations were provided by FIBA Oceania.

Over 30 other officials from the host country, Australia, American Samoa, Fiji, Palau, Federated States of Micronesia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Guam, Samoa, Vanuatu, and the Cook Islands are also taking part in the seminar.

At the seminar, the administrators will be introduced to the FIBA Organizer, a computerized competition management and website program which will be distributed internationally and will be used by 212 basketball federations throughout the world. FIBA Oceania staff have been working with SportingPulse, a Melbourne-based technology company, for the past four years to develop a computerized competition management and website program.

According to the FIBA Oceania website, FIBA Oceania secretary general Steve Smith emphasized that with the cost of hosting the seminar, it is important that those in attendance are responsible for disseminating the information gained to all stake holders in the basketball community within their respective federations.
