UFO eyes mid-October start
Even as the 2005 MDX Amateur Radio Club Inter-Color Basketball League finished its season with the crowning of champion Samahang Ilokano at Pangasinense last Sunday, the United Filipino Organization is preparing to unveil its 6th basketball season by the middle of this month.
According to UFO president Roland Pamintuan, organizers behind the island’s premiere all-Filipino basketball league are in a frenzied pace to meet its mid-October kick-off date, which he revealed would be no less than spectacular.
The owner of RP Construction said the UFO would be pulling out all the stops for the Opening Day of the 6th Annual UFO Basketball League.
For instance, Pamintuan said, the cagefest’s opening parade would be held at the Oleai track and field to give players and fans alike a more airy and comfortable experience. He said this would be unlike the claustrophobic and sauna-like atmosphere of previous UFO cage league openings, which were held inside the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Taking a cue from the MDX basketball league, Pamintuan said UFO would be hiring a live band to provide entertainment during the opening ceremony. He also said that they would be taking the level of entertainment a notch higher by also hiring dance performers to further amuse the crowd.
Pamintuan said several awards are also at stake on Opening Day as teams would be vying for the Best Muse and Best Uniform plums. He reminded teams to start as early as now to look for their respective muses and make sure their uniforms would be up to the stringent palates of the judges.
The UFO president also said like the past couple of years, the organization would once again be sponsoring Mass the morning before Opening Day at the San Antonio Parish Church. He said all players, coaches, team officials, and supporters are invited to attend Mass, which would be conducted by Father Manny Corcuera.

Last year, Visminda-Country House won its second straight UFO championship after downing SIP, 99-91, in Game 2 of their final series also at the Ada Gym.
