SIP, futball, and football
Samahang Ilokano at Pangasinense won the 2005 MDX Amateur Radio Club championship, while soccer and its distant cousin, American football, both went back to life this past week.
Elimination round No. 2 SIP successfully defended its MDX title after walloping a visibly outclassed JCN Enterprises in last Sunday’s championship game at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium, 102-87. Earlier in the day, Poohdeni took third place after the pennant champs defeated 287 Club-Verizon 102-82.
A day before the MDX cagefest’s curtains drew to a close, the 2005 season of the Commonwealth Football League was unfurled at the CPA Airport Field. Tinian Typhoon drew first blood after they bludgeoned the Barbarians, 12-6. The Shell Lightning also won their opener when they downed the Express Electronics Eagles, 16-2.
Elsewhere on Saipan on Saturday, the Northern Mariana Islands Football (Soccer) Association also kicked off their season with an evaluation of players at American Memorial Park. By Tuesday, NMIFA secretary Peter Coleman was already knee deep in participants as the association was busy teaching the ins and outs of futball to a total of 260 kids.
In other sports, the 7th Annual Miller Lite Coed Four-Person Volleyball League held its annual draft with 2005 Mini Games veteran Kitinian Intharaluk going first overall to Hot Mix.
Newly renamed Northern Marianas Athletics also recognized departing coach Chris Porco during an informal gathering Tuesday at the Kilili Pavilion in Oleai. Porco would be heading back to his home state of Michigan.
The islands’ youth also were celebrated last week as the 2nd Annual 3-on-3 Back 2 School Street Basketball Jam crowned champions in four age groups last Saturday at the Civic Center Basketball Court in Susupe.
Non-stop basketball was also played as the 2005 Saipan Rotary Club Youth Basketball League and 2005 Budweiser Cup BANMI Men’s Island-wide Basketball League both continued last week at Ada Gym.
