SBDC offers communication and work habits seminars

With multiple languages spoken in the CNMI, have you experienced ineffective communication at your place of work? Does absenteeism, repeated tardiness and/or drug and alcohol abuse also give your organization headaches? If these issues have troubled you and you’d like some guidance toward improvement, you’ll want to attend the “Fundamental Skills of Communicating” and “Improving Employee Work Habits” workshops on Saipan.

In the “Fundamental Skills of Communicating” workshop, managers and team leaders will learn to design clear and concise messages, understand and comprehend non-verbal communication clues, improve listening skills, and overcome barriers to understanding…such as psychological, cultural and situational.

The “Improving Employee Work Habits” workshop will guide the manager in distinguishing between job performance and work habits, dealing with unsatisfactory work habits early in the process, clearly explaining unsatisfactory work habits that focuses on behavior, involving the team member in the process of correcting the behavior and building controls into the process of improving work habits.

Dr. Ken Shankweiler, principal of KIS Communications, is currently on Saipan to teach the courses. His seminars have been presented across America at major universities and to major corporations such as General Motors, Motorola and AT&T. He holds degrees in Psychology and Engineering and has spent more than 30 years in management. He has held titles of vice president, general manager and director of Engineering. He is the former “Chairman of Continuous Improvement” for a $4-billion Fortune 500 company.

The “Fundamental Skills of Communicating” workshop will be held this Thursday, Sept. 15, from 6pm to 9pm at the NMC Small Business Development Center. The “Improving Employee Work Habits” workshop will be held next Thursday, Sept. 22, from 6pm to 9pm at the NMC SBDC.

Registration begins at 5:30pm and the cost for each workshop is $10 per person. Attendees are encouraged to bring a pad of paper and pen. Pre-registration is essential because of limited seating so contact the NMC SBDC at 235-1551. (PR)
