A taste of the Old West on Saipan
Longing for a Wild West experience? You don’t need to go far. In the busy commercial district within Saipan, the Country House Restaurant and the Wild West gift shop offer food and assorted merchandise that are distinctively western style.
The Wild West shop celebrates its first year anniversary this month. The shop has become businessman Koichi Tabei’s latest venture on Saipan, where he has stayed for more than a decade now.
Authentic cowboy and Native American outfit such as jackets, boots, hats, and other products are on display at the store.
Tabei also said the store’s Native American jewelry are especially designed and made by prominent Native American artists Michael Kirk, Tony Eriacho, and Harvey and Janie Chavez.
The store also offers cowboy and Native American crafts and paraphernalia, such as incense and dreamcatchers.
The store stands across the Country House Restaurant, the longevity of which is proof of its continuing success. Already serving local residents and tourists for 14 years, Country House has become locally famous for its steak and seafood.
Country House literally stands on a Western-style wooden house converted into a restaurant. Wooden Native American sculpture and cowboy hats hanging from the wall provide an Old West ambiance. It also has a bar that offers assorted kinds of beer, wine, whisky, brandy and other beverages.
“We have the best steak and seafood on the island. That’s why customers keep on coming,” Tabei said.
The restaurant, which opens from 11am to 2pm for lunch and from 6pm to 11pm for dinner, also serves lobsters and fresh fish.
Besides its certified Angus beef servings in assorted steak styles, Country House also offers Fish Meuniere, butter sautéed fillet of fish with braun lemon butter sauce; Seafood Plater, breaded shrimp, scallop, oyster, fish, and squid that are deep-fried and served with tartar sauce; Roast Lobster; and steak and seafood combinations, such as Grilled Prawn and Tenderloin Steak.
For lunch, the restaurant offers sandwiches, pasta, fish and meat dishes, besides the popular steaks.
