4.8-quake shakes Anatahan, another one on Sunday
A long-period earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 occurred on Anatahan yesterday morning.
The Emergency Management Office and the U.S. Geological Survey said the quake occurred at about 6:45am yesterday.
Citing information from the National Earthquake Information Center, the agencies also said a 5.0-intensity quake occurred at around 4:52pm Sunday. They estimated the event’s epicenter at 80 miles east-southeast of Pagan.
The agencies said yesterday’s 4.8-intensity quake likely occurred beneath Anatahan. They said long-period earthquakes have intensified since 2am, most of them lasting less than 30 seconds. They said the number of long-period events ranged from five to 30 per hour.
In a joint report released yesterday, though, the agencies said tremor levels on Anatahan ranged between 15 and 65 percent of peak levels. They said there was no report about increasing ash emissions.
Yesterday morning, the agencies said the ash plume, which was estimated at an altitude of 15,000 feet, was moving northwesterly. After about 88 to 110 nautical miles from Anatahan, the ash plume curved slightly to the north-northwest.
