Verizon phone customers on Tinian were without service yesterday after a lightning hit the telecommunications firm’s facility.

Verizon general manager Tony Mosley said a network shelf card blew due to a lightning strike early yesterday morning. The network shelf connects the network and all the links and is necessary to bring up the dial tone for the landline phone service.

As of 5pm, the company was still expecting delivery of the replacement card. Aside from installing the card, some diagnostic work also needs to be done before the phone service could be turned back up.

Mosley said, however, that the cellular service was brought back up immediately after the incident. DSL and Internet service were also working.

He added that the problem occurred purely by accident and that there was nothing Verizon could have done to prevent it.

“There was no human error involved; it’s simply Mother Nature. Those things happen,” Mosley said. “Good thing that we’re well spared and we have technicians that responded immediately.”

He urged customers to call Verizon’s customer service department for questions or concerns regarding their phone service.
